Smoking sinking moods ?

One Cigarette After Another, Yet the Mood Keeps Sinking? Understanding the Vicious Cycle Through “Metal Controls Wood”

Have you ever noticed that friends who smoke heavily seem to sigh more often, and seem to slip into low moods more easily?

That’s not a coincidence. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory and modern medicine, approaching the question from two completely different angles, arrive at a strikingly similar conclusion.

🌿 The TCM Perspective: “Metal Controls Wood” Is Really About Blocked Flow

In TCM’s Five Elements framework, the Lungs correspond to Metal, and the Liver corresponds to Wood.

Normally, “Metal controlling Wood” is a balancing relationship — the Lung qi descends and purifies, which in turn helps the Liver qi rise and spread smoothly.

But cigarette smoke is hot and drying by nature. Long-term exposure scorches the Lungs and tends to cause Lung qi to stagnate and fail to descend (this is described as “Metal excess,” not “Metal deficiency”).

Once the Lung’s function of governing descent breaks down, the body’s qi movement gets stuck in the middle. The Liver qi, which should naturally rise and spread outward, instead gets pinned down by this “excess Metal that won’t descend.” Unable to rise and unfold, it gradually knots into stagnation.

This is why people who smoke long-term often experience:

Sighing for no clear reason

Low mood, lack of drive

A tendency to default to pessimistic thinking

The key point isn’t that “Metal bullies Wood” — it’s that the Lung’s own descending function fails, and in doing so, it blocks the Liver’s pathway for free flow. This is one of the most common roots of what TCM calls “Liver qi stagnation.”

🧠 The Modern Medicine Perspective: A Bidirectional Vicious Cycle

Epidemiological research — including an analysis of over 460,000 people by a team at the University of Bristol in the UK — found that long-term smokers face roughly 1.5 to 2 times the risk of low-mood-related issues compared to non-smokers. But researchers are careful to emphasize: this isn’t a simple one-way “smoking causes illness” story. It’s a bidirectional relationship:

Neurotransmitters get “overdrawn.” Nicotine gives a short-term dopamine boost that feels like a lift, but repeated long-term stimulation dulls the brain’s reward circuitry, making low motivation and flat affect more likely during withdrawal.

Chronic inflammation plays a role. The chronic inflammatory response triggered by smoking raises levels of inflammatory cytokines in the body, which are thought to interfere with brain regions involved in mood regulation.

The “self-medication” trap. Many people with low mood instinctively reach for a cigarette to “take the edge off” anxiety — but this is really quenching thirst with poison: the brief relief is often followed by an even deeper low.

💡 So, Who’s Really Influencing Whom?

The answer: it goes both ways.

Smoking may be one contributing factor behind low mood (whether you look at it through “Lung-Liver imbalance” or “neurotransmitter depletion”), while people already struggling with low mood are more likely to lean on cigarettes for self-soothing. The two reinforce each other, tightening into a cycle that’s hard to break.

TCM’s “Metal controls Wood” and modern medicine’s “inflammation–neurotransmitter” pathway are, at their core, describing the same phenomenon: when one system in the body falls out of balance, mood is often the first place the alarm goes off.

If you often feel a tightness in your chest, catch yourself sighing, or just can’t seem to find your drive, it might be worth paying closer attention to whether your Lung qi is descending and dispersing the way it should.

⚠️ A gentle reminder: if low mood has been affecting your daily life for a while, it’s worth reaching out to a doctor or a mental health professional. Physical self-care and professional support aren’t mutually exclusive — you can absolutely pursue both at the same time.
